Life coaches cost less and deal with, well, life. These are personally oriented sessions, supporting areas like resilience, personal growth and goal achievement. They cost up to a few hundred pounds /dollars an hour. Executive coaches are more specialised,. They need a broader skillset to understand many areas; corporate structures, HR areas – L&D, roles & responsibilities and competency matrices. Their bread and butter are leadership skills, work dynamics, typical corporate issues especially politics, as well as how to balance life and work. Executive coaches have a greater depth and range of expertise. In addition this can lead to huge financial and performance gains, so session fees are typically much higher (2 – 5 times) than for life coaching.

Like most things, the best costs more than the average. However the evidence of great coaching should be felt almost immediately with results following close behind. If don’t feel or see a difference in a few sessions, then it’s not working for you. Additionally if you require the full range of skills from your coach; corporate expertise, business acumen, psychological development, mentoring all wrapped up in a friendly but strong advocate for you with 15-20 years corporate experience, then be prepared to pay at the top end of executive coaching fees.
